It cost me $750 and I have my MS67 2003-P 6 step Jefferson nickel. It showed up within the first 12 boxes. The 2003-D is a different story. So far they look roughed up. A MS65 is the best for that catagory. The Monticello building is really strucked up strong on some of these nickels. It just jumps out at you. There's definitely something different about it. The few cents I've seen, a couple really look like perfection. A few have this red to amber rose look and I don't usually spend alot of time studying cents but these have really caught my eye. The one I had the 16x loupe on, I could not find a mark or tick, so I'm thinking MS68, maybe 69.is that possible? A couple of the Sacs look super but all 100 are sold. Am I making a pitch here? Hopefully, I'll have a few up on ebay in the next few days and they will be in the raw.

I didn't have any luck with nickels, but agree on the cents. I only ordered 10 set, but submitted 8 or 9 cents for grading. Should have the results back by next week hopefully. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Hi Keith

I found the cents really amazing as I went through the first few sets. One would look really nice then another, then I'm telling my daughter, look at this Lincoln cent. Then I started using the loupe. One had a tiny tick on the coat so I'd check another then back to nickels but then another cent catches my eye and I can't find a mark on it. And the beard and hair are in unusal detail. The Sacs, I've noticed a few had long thin hits around the eyes and nose of the gal. It was odd they would commonly appear in that area. You should have some pretty good results if your seeing what I'm seeing. Let me know what developes.

I found a wonderful 2002-D cent last year in a mint set. It was covered in glowing red luster with not spots and it was flawless without magnification, which basically means MS69! I sent it off to PCGS with some other stuff (in what was to become my last modern submission to them ever). It graded MS67. If this coin was MS67, then I would love to see a 68! I sent the coin in to NGC and guess what it graded...MS69! The coin is now in my collection!

I haven't been able to find a nice nickle in the 2002 mint sets either. They are all struck thru or hairlined. I will be getting 2003"S very soon. Hopefully I will be able to find something!

While I'm grading these mint set coins, perhaps someone could shed some light on why all the Denver mint coins look so scrappy? How do they get transported to the US mint........by train? It would be nice to get these coins from Denver..they just might look a little nicer.

Thanks for the updates -- hopefully I'll have results later today or tomorrow.

Hi Keith

I can't believe there wasn't one markfree 2003 D along with the group of P's . I spent more time with the cents then any other denomination. If I found just one fiber thin nick on the coin, it was added to the MS66 group so the D's could grade higher. Most of the D's were spotty and weren't graded. The 2003-P's could easily grade higher. I only stuck them in the 67 catagory.

Early on, I thought I had a 67 P nickel but downgraded it after finding a nick in the hair but it's still a very nice coin.

The same for the dimes, one nick or tick, I graded it a 66.

Most coins with distracting marks were not graded unless the profiles were markfree and they were graded MS64, possibly MS65.

Most of the Kennedys with marked up shields weren't graded unless the obverse was nice and how marked up the shield was. I have one MS67/65 half where there is just one long scratch on the top part of the shield.

The Sacs are another story. There are two profiles, baby and mother, then there's the blanket, many high relief areas for nicks. The Sacs that graded high are very nice with a prooflike finish but for most of them they were pretty chewed up.

I haven't started on the quarters yet but they will go fast as I will center on prooflike examples only, if they're in the sets.

But for 500 coins and aside from the cents, only 18 graded 66 with one 67 and then there are a few nice split graded coins.

I found the cents to be difficult to grade with a regular 5x and to combat the luster and angles of the design. I was constantly turning the coins in every way to make sure I didn't overlook a hidden nick. I also used a 16x loupe.

I have also received 360 additional mint set nickels in the mail and have been going through those as well. Like the 2003-P cents, I must have 30-40 MS65-66 2001-D's They're very nice nickels but what the heck am I to do with that many of one date?

I'm very interested in hearing your results but I can't believe they can come up with a grade in 7-10 seconds on these Lincohn cents, it takes much longer to grade a MS69 or 70 coin.

OK, results are in:

2003-D cents -- 2 68RDs

2003 cent -- 3 68RD's, 2 68RD PL's, 2 69RD's

2003-P nickel -- 1 67FS

As to the rest:

2003-D cent -- 66RD

2003-D half -- 66

2003-D Maine -- 66

2003-D Illinois -- 66

2003-D Arkansas -- 2 67's

2003-P dimes -- 1 66, 1 67

2003-P halves -- 1 65, 1 66

2003-P Maine -- 2 66

2003-P Missouri -- 65

2003-P Illinois -- 66

2003-P Arkansas -- 66

I thought I had a pretty good batch overall, so I can't wait to get the coins back. Some of them I sent in just because I wanted to see what the grading results were going to be. It appears that any notion that NGC is looser on Modern coins is bogus right now.

Excellent results, although I don't have access to the NGC's pop report to generalize where they fall. I think a 66 D half would be a nice coin to have. If you can, give me a detailed description on the P nickel. No luck with the Sacs?

Hopefully, I'll have the coins by this weekend, and I'll try to scan some of the nicer ones. And no, I've never had any luck with finding Sacs worth submitting.
