I think if it was plated just after it was minted then the gold has protected the coin over the years, like paint protects metal from rusting. A little effort removing the gold, and you may have a nice coin.

The coin looks XF/AU.

 

You cannot remove the gold. The luster will be harmed.

Greg is right. Removing the gold will damage the surface. There's very visible wear on the eagle's breast on the reverse.

For twenty dollars how can you go wrong? I think you had good fortune with that SBA that was gold plated and turned out to be a neat error.

I'm not sure how you removed the gold but if you're able to do it again with this one who knows? It might be the coin you think it is.
