It is now known as the "Portland Penny," Portland was founded in on Jan, 23 1851. The toss happened in 1845 however. I think this is wrong, but I'm going to guess the 1845 penny.

1835 Large Cent yay.gif

893applaud-thumb.gifThis coin was used by Francis W. Pettygrove and Massachusetts lawyer Asa Lovejoy to decide between Boston (Lovejoy's hometown was Boston, Massasschusetts) and Portland (Pettygrove's hometown was Portland, Maine) for the name of the City. Pettygrove won two out of three tosses. The coin is housed in the Oregon History Center in downtown Portland. 893applaud-thumb.gif

It was an 1835 Large Cent that was used in 1845 that was used in a coin toss between Francis Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy to determine whether to name the claim they had staked as "Boston" or "Portland." The coin is now know as the "Portland Penny" and is on display in Portland for viewing.

It was a 1835 Large Cent. It was used by Francis Pettygrove in a coin toss to decide whether the land partnership he was in with Asa Lovejoy would be called Boston or Portland. Obviously he won otherwise it would be Boston, Oregon.

Thanks,

Greg
