The AU $2.5 far outweighs the $5.00 which in VF is considered a bullion piece by most standards. The $2.5 is actually a nice type collector coin and will increase in value along with nicer gold type coins.

I would also go with the quarter eagle unless the half was a really nice date. Also, I think you should have more choices, like how about a BU common date half eagle which will probably run the same price as an AU quarter? Either way, for common date gold, I personally stay away from anything under choice AU unless I am paying melt for it.

and don't by raw gold sight unseen, or even going by a quasi-nice picture. Remember, gold is soft and the circulated stuff has often been used in jewlery, a.k.a. "mounted".
