Is there just no interest in coins foreign?

 

Sorry about the beef ?. Just heard the phrase and once explained thought immediately of this vast wasteland.

So here we sit, waiting for a question that may not come. If it does I hope it's a good one, like "I have this coin; it has 2 sides and and edge. Can you tell me what it is and how much it's worth?" Those are the best followed by ones about HELVETICA, MAGYAR and MAROC.

OK, what coins do you absolutely suck at identifying? I really stink at ID'ing oriental coins, Chinese in particular. I'd rather date 10 Israeli coins than one Chinese. What about you? Any pointers you can offer to help me do better with Asian coins?

I've found placing the coins over my eyes and walking in traffic helps me identify coins. Try it and report back.

All foreign coins. I don't collect them. But when the US Coin Forum slows down, I make a post to it instead of complaining.

Good for you, keithdagen. Knowing you suck is a step in the right direction. The only way you can go is up. Try something easy, like 1 from every country, maybe you'll find something you like.

Get Japanese Coinage by Jacobs and Vermule and that will help not only with identifying many Asian coins, but, it will also give you valuable information on how many of these pieces were originally made. The book is out of print so you may have to get it from someone like Charlie Davis.

The worst coins for me to identify is Thailand and several Southeast asian countries such as Malaysia. UGH. I have learn to read again and with different characters for numbers. I'm glad I know a few dealers who like these coins.
