QUESTION:

 

A law was passed in 1864 to insure that the U.S. Mint's new bronze coins would be accepted by the public. What did this law specify?

they cost less than a penny and because the new coins weren't really worth a penny they were not hoarded.

The law made them legal tender. As I recall, it was section 4 of the act, which stated, again as I recall, "And be it further enacted, That the said coins shall be a legal tender in any payment, the one -cent coin to the amount of ten cents, and the two-cent coin to the amount of twenty cents"

ANSWER:

 

It prohibited the manufacture of any privately minted one-cent and two-cent tokens.
