1969 S Jefferson Nickel Thick Rim?
1 1

3 posts in this topic

Hello friends,

I have these 2 1969 S Jefferson Nickels.

One on the right looks normal. Rim is thin MM is small, lettering looks normal. The one on the right rim seems thicker, MM is closer to rim as well as date and letters. All look a little thicker.

It appears the MM is also in a slight different location on the left coin than on the right in relation to the ponytail. The right one seems to be placed a little higher.

Thoughts?

Mintmarks were hand punched back then so the placement varies.   Everything else is just wear and tear from circulation, keep it if you like, every now and then an oddly placed mintmark will garner some attention and promotion and become a minor variety.

The thickness of the rim and distortion of the rim are likely the result of damage, such as from the coin being tumbled in the inner mechanism of a dryer or the edge having been beaten with an object ("spooned").

Mintmarks were hand punched into each coinage die until the early 1990s and, as mentioned, may vary in position
