Popular Post Sandon
Welcome to the NGC chat board. The reverse of this coin was planed off and engraved with someone's initials for use as a gift known as a "love token". This was done with a number of coins from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, especially with dimes and gold dollars. There are collectors of love tokens, but most other collectors regard these as mutilated coins. powermad5000, Mike Meenderink and ldhair
spodrbik
Thank You for the info., I never of that. Where would you try selling this coin?
JKK
There might be Ebay interest, though not for big money. It's worth at least most of the normal Ag value of a Barb dime. The issue is I'm not sure what the engraving means, which would kind of be a major mover because if someone were looking and it said certain initials and that's exactly what they wanted, it's like they don't much care how much it costs. Other than that, you're hoping for a collector who doesn't yet have one, but probably the spending interest is less.
Just Bob
I would list it on eBay or one of the other online selling platforms. You can do an advanced eBay search for "sold" listings of similar tokens to get a feel for what it might bring. I am not able to read the letters very well, but it looks like it says "DFS." From what I have read about these, the middle initial is usually the first letter of the last name, especially if it is larger than the other two letters. The initials can be the name of one person, or the outside two can be first letters of the names of two people. So, if I have the letters right, this could have been made for a name like Daisy Sue Farmer, or, if for a couple, Dan & Sally Fields.
