The extra metal in the numeral 5 is a die chip.   Technically it is an error but so minor that it has no or very limited value, die chips are extremely common on the mid 50's cents here is a definition of a die chip.

"Definition:  A small piece (less than 4 square millimeters) that falls out of the die face and has no direct connection to the design rim.  The missing piece leaves a void in the die face into which coin metal flows.  As a result, the coin shows a featureless lump in the affected area.

A die chip can be connected to a die crack or it can be freestanding.  Die chips frequently develop within narrow interstices in the design, such as the gap between the letters of LIBERTY.  Hence the so-called “BIE” errors."

   Die chips of this sort are abundantly common on cents and other U.S. coins of this era. Decades ago, there was a fad of collecting the "BIE" cents, but today they carry little or no premium and are not attributed by grading services. Maybe it is just me but I do not consider die chips an error, it is a die event. It is no different than die deterioration or die polishing. The die has been altered and every coin struck after the chip started would have that mark. You could have tens of thousands the same until the die was retired.  Most errors are a one time event due to improper striking of the coin. If the die has a chip, then no matter how well the coin is struck, it would still show, it has nothing to do with the improper striking of the coin.

Die chips are not considered errors. I have a 1955 S Lincoln Wheat Cent with a filled 5 and submitted it but it returned sans error and unfortunately also scratched.
