Mooney49
I just came across these that seem to have exact same problem on reverse. 1982 and 1983 What caused this? Edited November 21, 2023 by Mooney49 missing year
Moxie15
It is a strike issue. I think it is a weak strike, There are other possibilities such as a partially filled die or the the die was not straight.
Greenstang
A weak strike is a common problem on the reverse of Lincoln Memorials. To put it simply, the amount of material used to fill in Lincoln’s head leaves little left to fill in the reverse properly. EagleRJO
Mooney49
I just found another one with same issue. lol. Thank you for your help!
dprince1138
The green debri looks like corrosion. The area in STATES and E PLUR seems to be a grease soft strike. Mike Meenderink
powermad5000
Sigh....to the OP, please do not take any advice from dprince1138. This person has incorrect descriptions all over this forum. This was a common problem on the Lincoln Memorial cent series and even continues to this day into the Lincoln Shield Cent series. The advice from @Greenstang is correct and is a known issue with these cents. You will find many across many of the years with weak reverse lettering and in some cases where the coin was struck with worn out dies (which was also common), you can find some reverses with letters even missing. This is not an occurrence caused by grease filled dies but rather the coins design. I have several of these cents in slabs with weak reverse lettering. The darkened areas are environmental damage and the greenish areas are a condition called verdigris.

EagleRJO
Quote The area in STATES and E PLUR seems to be a grease soft strike Wrong again, with no clue what he is talking about as there is no such thing as a "grease soft strike". Please disregard these posts. Mike Meenderink and powermad5000
