New CAC Stickering Prices

The new CAC sticker pricing is out and there have definitely been price changes. Here are the new prices for CAC stickering:

1. Regular $22                  Insured Amount $3,000

2. Express $68                 "                       " $10,000

3. Premium $150              "                       " $125,000

4. Rarity $1,000                "                       " Unlimited Value

I believe that the new pricing to sticker a coin is designed to make up for past issues and possibly to encourage collectors and dealers to use CACG instead of having a coin stickered. The new service, CACG (grading) is starting this month. And coins that don't sticker will now be charged a fee, but with a discount applied.

I believe I read that the prices will continue to be increased as the stickers are phased out, $22 does not seem like much of a deterrent. They could jump it up to $25 and not skip a beat most likely, at least not until CACG is running full bore. (shrug)

What was the cost prior to the increase?

How do those fees compare to PCGS and NGC ?

https://www.cacgrading.com/pricing   Just looked them up it seems that they are pretty much on par with the big 2 on the modern and the economy.  However the upper tiers are exponentially greater than the big 2

The sticker is not authentication or grading. It merely says "We find this coin desirable and will buy it from you." (At a cheap price, of course.)

I don't ignore a comment by a grader who no longer grades.  My first thought, which I assume most collectors entertain is, What makes this coin extra special; what does JA see that exceeded a coin's normal attributes and prompted him to reach out for a sticker?  For those who submit coins for CAC consideration, it reaffirms their feeling. For those whose coins are rejected, the big question is, Why?  We tend to forget there are fallible people staffing those assembly lines who, like us, are partial to some features and not at all to others.

What about those of us who would never submit ANYTHING to JA for any reason whatsoever even if he PAID US?

I have never sent anything to JA, but if they paid me? I’d send everything! xD

Trying to compare the sticker prices to the price charged for grading is rather useless it seems to me, these are two different services with different cost structures and goals.   Additionally, I doubt that very many of the people that submit coins to CAC have ever cared how those prices compare, it has always been an add on service for those who wanted to use it.

While the new prices for CAC stickering have taken quite a jump and are less collector friendly than before, especially so when you consider that now collectors will have to pay some of the fee for coins that fail.   The one saving point for collector submitters is that JA has grandfathered in a small cost savings, each collector that has submissions abilities will be able to have the first 20 coins that fail to sticker not be charged the new failure rate.   In my last submission to CAC that I got back last week, I sent in one coin that I expected to fail, the reason I did that was because I wanted JA's opinion of the coin's toning.   So I included a short note and asked for his opinion if possible which I did indeed receive, that type of service and passing of knowledge is rare in the coin business and I for one have learned a great deal from my submissions to CAC.

Now comparing the new CAC grading service prices to that of NGC and PCGS is a much more relevant comparison to me.

Stickering will eventually go away. Snickering will continue apace. Expect yet another slab shape, that needs yet another file box to fit it properly. Rinse, repeat.

That's what I was referring to :)....I thought CAC stopped giving out beans ?

CAC is allowing members who are grandfathered in to submit 20 coins annually under the old $16 price tier. Coins that do not sticker will not be charged a fee. It's 20 coins per year and coins that don't sticker count toward the 20 coin limit.

Well the op is clearly about stickering prices, hence my post and my confusion about your confusion ;).

No the stickering business is still active and will be for an undetermined time (up to ten years longer is possible) at this time going forward.   Submissions were halted at the end of May for a couple of weeks but are now once again open to current members, new memberships are still closed.

Do you have a source for this? What does it mean to ne “grandfathered in”? Is that the same thing as being a member before this new policy change?

Part of the post you quoted is correct part is not.   Collectors who have submission ability can have 20 review failures per year at CAC stickering that they will not be charged the new failure fee.   That could be twenty failures in one submission or one failure each over twenty submissions.   However, the price for the econ tier is now $22 not the $16 it was prior to being suspended.   CAC stickering is still not accepting new members, so the term "grandfathered in" just means that this policy is only extended to collectors (not dealers) who have submission privileges.

The informstion I posted is corrrct. The information is on the the CAC forums and I checked with customer service to verify it. Once a member has had 20 coins either sticker or fail, then future economy submissions will be at the new $22.00 level. And coins that don't sticker will be charged the fee, but with a 25% rebate.

That clears it up, thank you. I didn’t remember reading anything about the $16 fee, since now it has been raised to $22. And the “grandfathered in” confused me since there are either members or non members, unless they are separating current members from members admitted after this policy.
I understand the concept now but with one question. How many years will these 20 failures per year be extended?

Grandfathered means current members (their terminology). They are saying the 20 coin deal is an annual program. I hope it lasts awhile as it is a nice idea. I just sent in 20 coins and they are my first submission this year. I'll post the results when they come back.

Do you have a link to this information?   I have not seen this posted anywhere on the CAC forum.   I am referring to the $16 vs $22 fee, I know about the 20 failures that will not be charged a fee.

@robec1347 I have not seen any information or statement to clarify how long the twenty coin per year exemption will last, I too hope it will be for several years.

Actuaaly, I will correct myself. The information came from emails CAC sent me. I was going to hold off on sending the 20 coins in, but the rep said to send them now. CAC will keep track of the 20 coins under the program. The submission form does not list this offer, but she said they will automaticcaly correct the money due on the member portal. I was also able to put a cc on file, which is better than sending a full payment and waiting for a refund.

I found the email, dated May 9. According to the email a special Grandfathered tier was suppose to be included on the online pdf form, which it wasn’t. Hopefully it won’t be needed.

What's with this "not accepting new members" stuff -- I think it's been that way from BEFORE Covid !! :o

The old members had to have submitted most or all of their personal coins long ago...probably what is happening is these "grandfathered" members are submitting coins on behalf of people who never submitted their coins before.

They should take coins from whomever; why grandfather some dealer who submits 50 coins a months and exclude a small collector who just wants CAC to review 5-10 a YEAR.

Yes, they’ve been opening and closing membership since they first launched in 2007. I waited three years before I was able to join, then membership was shut down again. It’s been like that since.

But that email says nothing about a special rate of $16 vs the newly announced econ tier of $22; I think that you will be charged $22 for each coin that passes but I will hope I'm wrong on this.   Please update once you get your invoice for the group you just sent in so we have a definitive answer to the amount of the fee.

I was accepted as a collector submitter by CAC around 2010 or so and I have submitted perhaps half of the coins that I could from my collection.   It is the dealers (and some collectors) that send in everything without doing any type of prescreening that have caused this huge backlog and the resultant closing of new memberships.   JA has said that overall collectors represent a very small portion of the submissions that CAC receives.   However, if they just threw the doors open to everyone the backlog would be months or even a year.
