Hello @powermad5000

Thank you for reaching out to us. To determine if NCS can improve the appearance of a coin, the NCS conservation team will have to evaluate the coin. Contaminants, artificial toning and substances used to alter the color of a coin can usually be removed. You can view examples of what NCS can and cannot do here: NGC | NCS Conservation.

Keep in mind that substances applied to a coin may hide other problems, such as scratches or improper cleaning. These issues may become apparent after NCS removes the artificial toning or applied substances, but NCS’s conservation techniques do not cause them. None of NCS’s techniques will cause scratches or an “Improperly Cleaned” notation at NGC.

Regarding a coin with an altered surface, surface alterations can significantly damage the surface of a coin. NCS conservation cannot undo damage to a coin's surface. NCS can safely remove harmful surface contaminants and often dramatically improve a coin’s eye appeal; however, NCS will never perform repairs such as filling holes or smoothing scratches, or doing any type of mechanical alteration.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Thank you.
