1855 Large Cent Question 0

I have an 1855 Large Cent that seems to have excessive wear on the date.  It looks odd because the other features close to the date do not appear to exhibit nearly as much wear as the date.  Is this just normal wear or was there an issue with the die that caused a weak strike?  Thanks!!

Details like this can often occur from grease, or even dirt, making it's way into some of the details of the die.

Not what the Mint intended. I don't believe I have seem something like this before. Sad fate; nice denticles, though!

A partially filled die is the most likely cause. There are no varieties of the 1855 Upright 55 cent that are particularly noted for a weak date.
