Is this a die cap error or a metal shop experiment?

I've had this coin for a long time and never thought anything about it. My intuition says this damage is the result of someone taking their aggression out on a 1944 Lincoln cent.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hello Brad and welcome to the forum (can't help but to like the name...). I agree with the other comments above, just a damaged Lincoln.  Here's a picture of a die cap and a website link to numerous types of die caps.  There's also lots of good info on error-ref.com concerning just about any type of Mint made error out there.  Good luck.
