LONG NOSE VARIETY - SEEKING NGC TO RECOGNIZE THIS VARIETY

RE: WITH REFERENCE TO THE FANTASY COINS OF COINCRAFT (RICHARD LOBEL SERIES)

ON A VERY FEW OF RICHARD LOBEL'S EDWARD VIII FANTASY PIECES COLLECTORS HAVE FOUND A DIE ERROR/ MINTING ERROR ON THE EFFIGY OF EDWARD VIII.

COLLECTORS HAVE LABELLED THE VARIETY 'LONG NOSE' DUE TO THE  RESEMBLANCE OF THE EFFIGY HAVING AN EXTENDED LONG NOSE.  THE 'LONG NOSE' VARIETY  (ON THE  EFFIGY OF EDWARD VIII)  IS WHERE THE BRIDGE OF THE NOSE EXTENDS DIRECTLY TO THE EYE AS THE FOREHEAD/ BRIDGE IS MISSING THROUGH A DIE/ PRINTING ERROR THAT MAKES THE NOSE VERY LONG (PINOCCHIO NOSE) AND IS SEEN THROUGH-OUT THE DIFFERENT METAL COMPOSITION  OF  THE RICHARD LOBEL (COINCRAFT SERIES).

THE VARIETY SEEMS TO BE ACROSS THE WHOLE SERIES OF THE EDWARD VIII COINCRAFT FANTASY COINAGE BUT RATHER SCARCE TO LOCATE A PIECE. I HAVE SEEN A LONG NOSE VARIETY IN THE GOLD SOVEREIGN, SILVER SOVEREIGN AND THAT OF THE NICKEL AND BRONZE CROWNS COINAGE BUT NOT YET SEEN ONE IN THE SILVER CROWNS.

NGC GRADERS PLEASE ADVICE IF YOU REQUIRE FURTHER INFORMATION.

Hello Morganthebrave!

We recognize all varieties in Portraits of a Prince: Coins, Medals, and Banknotes of Edward VIII by Joseph Giordano, by assigned reference. I believe all effigy variants are described with different numbers and this area is relatively well cataloged. If this is a un-cataloged subvariant, it would not be noted.

Hello Lisa B

Thank you for the reply.  And thank the NGC graders for such a  rapid review -very honorable of them.

In terms of the long nose variety, I have consulted several Edward VIII collectors on the 'long nose' variety and there is no mention in the 'Portraits of a Prince' . In fact we had already reviewed all known reference books concerning the long nose variety and could find no evidence of such a mention. Geoffrey Hearn owned the original dies which my friend, Richard Lobel acquired an proceeded to make additional Coincraft issued fantasy pieces.

According to Richard, the re-strikes of the Edward VIII Effigy had an ugly ear which was the prominent way of telling the original from the re-strike as well as a few re-strikes having a 'circular band / discoloration ring on the coin.

As you can clearly see from the pictures supplied, the Coincraft effigy demonstrates a perfect set of ears but missing the bridge to the nose. Discussions with numismatic collectors of Edward VIII coinage, have come to the conclusion that to be deemed a long nose variety, the bridge of the nose must not be present at all and that the nose extends clearly to the eye.

Could you please review and provide feedback.

Thank you for the reply and as such we hope that a further review of the long nose variety will be considered. Should more information be needed, please do not hesitate to request.

Appreciate your kind help.

Warm regards,

Dr. Morgan
