1865 3c nickel type of error

Just wanting to clarify what type of error this is (or is it a combination) and whether it adds or detracts value from it. The most noticeable area is above the D through A in United States. The top of the D is open and it has the extra metal above the S and between the T and A. You can also see the raised area of metal cut through United, under the bust, and over the top of America through about the R. Then a faint trace from the hair to the F.

Thanks for any insight.

Welcome to the forum. This appears to be a die break. The die literally cracks/breaks with repeated use and allows metal to flow outside of the intended design.

The open top of the D is due to a hub break.  That piece chiiped out of the hub used to make the dies so there was no recess in the die to make the top of the D.  The coin has extensive die cracks running through much of the obverse legend. and to the rim betweeen D & S.  The die has been chipping along the crack above the S and between TA creating internal die breaks.  These type of coins are quite interesting, but since the coppernickel three and five cent pieces are well known for having this type of fature they usually do not command a premium.  In fact it is more difficult to find coins that DON'T have die cracks.  The dies did not last long and tended to go to pieces.
