1973 d penny error

Actually there is no coating on a '73. This one isn't copper plated zinc, as the current cents are. It is made of a copper alloy -  specifically,  .950 copper, and .050 zinc. (Since there is no tin in the mix, it is usually called brass, rather than bronze. )Your cent came in contact with something that caused the brass to tarnish in just that area. Pretty odd looking, I agree .

Yeah, that is a weird one!  But I think Bob has it just right.....something caused some weird tarnishing in just that one spot.
