1943 copper penny

I found an unusual coin, a 1943 copper penny. I googled it and tested it with a magnet and it doesn’t stick. What steps should I take to see if it’s real?

You should also check to see if the date style is correct for a 1943 cent, as there are alterations to genuine bronze cents, particularly ones dated 1948. You can see genuine examples at NGC's Coin Explorer website.

I took a look at the examples and the 3 has a tail and it’s kind of angled like a real 3 should be

You should be aware that these have been extensively counterfeited, and can be purchased cheaply on sites like Etsy. The odds of finding a genuine one in circulation are minuscule, and if you bought it from someone, it is almost certainly a fake.

No i didn’t purchase it, it was in my change with a steel 43 cent piece. I thought the 43 steel was special when I saw it

Be sure to update this thread when you get it authenticated...who knows, maybe you have a genuine article.  Post also if it comes back as counterfeit.

Yes i will. I’m having it sent to ngc to see if it’s authentic I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed
