Why would this coin not have a numerical grade

8 posts in this topic

NGC is promoting the fact that they have graded some Wass Molitor gold coins.  Why would the numerical grade not be noted on a coin of such rarity?

Because there was no room left on the label? (shrug)

Good question only NGC could answer, we can only speculate. Looks like the coin is owned by a museum so perhaps they did not care for a numerical grade, only preservation of such a rarity.

Is the coin on the market or still owned by the museum?  If by the museum then it is probably a similar deal to the one they made with the Smithsonian, the coins are "slabbed" but the slabs are not sealed.  There for protective purposes, but the coin can still be removed for examination and research.  So no numeric grade and no guarantee privilege.

The coin is owned by a museum, as are the other 2 Wass Moliter coins that have a numberical grade.  So why 2 of them, but not all 3?  From the cert numbers, they were all submitted together.

It likely has some surface issues.

OR

They did the same thing as with the Binion hoard---three holder types:

-no grade at all.

-Brilliant Uncirculated etc.

-Numerical grade--MS 63 etc.

I believe that when it is specified 'uncirculated' but with no numerical grade it is called a 'soft grade' and a numerical grade is called a 'hard grade'.

The coin is graded: "Uncirculated." It does not require a number, especially if there is some surface difficulty not event in the photo.

Frankly, the numbers don't really mean much. They are just opinions as much as "choice" or "gem" or "hey, that's really nice except for the fly poop."

One of these days I am going to go back and find as many of your one-liners as I can and make a post of them. :kidaround:
