Is this mercury a "cud" ?

Came across this in a bag of junk mercs.  Appears to possibly be a "cud".

Could be a small cud. It appears to have affected the date nearby. 

My other thought was it could just be some damage. Usually a cud will affect the rim, but that one doesn't look like it does (if I'm interpreting the pictures correctly). 

Can you post a couple more pictures?

I'm going with a die crack that sluffed a chip out of the die.

Yep, looks like a chip missing in the die to me as well.

What does the edge look like?  That dark line crossing the rim kind of looks like a cracked planchet.

Edge is normal. So not a planchet defect. Probably die chip.
