Can anyone tell me about this coin?

Hi. I'm new here and I don't really know anything about coins or coin collecting, but I've had this US coin for about 20 years and I just wondered if you guys could tell me anything about it  Thanks in advance.

It's not a coin.  It's a medal.  Probably privately produced, but someone else may know for sure.  Value is likely minimal.

somebody has also scratched it up by cleaning it, which will lower its' value somewhat. Do not use jewelers cloth or try to shine your coins, as it lowers value for most buyers.

Why does the date reflect '4 July 1766'

Possibly made by a foreign firm (or a recent college graduate) that isn't really up on out history.

Nah, man, government bureaucracy. It was submitted in 1766, but the approvals and red tape took 10 years to get through. It wasn't signed until 1776.
