Godspeed John Glenn! ^^

Let's put things in perspective. The commie b*stard Russkies were kicking our *sses in space. John Glenn was the first of four Americans to ride the Atlas Intercontinental Ballistic Missile... yeah, it really was a COLD War... and Glenn was a Marine.

If any of you have ever seen a Mercury capsule most likely you'll be surprised by how small they are. Literally the astronauts could not be taller than 5'11", and even being significantly smaller than that they still had to squeeze into their capsule in just the right way or they couldn't get in. They called it being shoe horned in. It was NOT a machine for the faint of heart...

John Glenn was the last of the Mercury 7. There were two more NASA groups that provided the Commanders and the vast majority of crew for the Gemini and Apollo missions. Unfortunately I STRONGLY suspect we'll be saying good-bye to AT LEAST one more of the early US astronauts in the upcoming year as there are EIGHT astronauts who were part of the second and third NASA groups of astronauts who were born in 1930 or earlier. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and Jim McDivitt were all born in 1928. D*ck Gordon was born in 1929. Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, Tom Stafford and John Young were born in 1930.
