Die polish lines.

There are many 1878 Morgan dollar reverses that have random trails of lines, especially on the reverse, that suggest a contaminant was present at the time dies were polished. I don't have good pictures handy, but here's one of the VAM 143 reverse from VAMWorld.

A coin full of die polishing lines can look cleaned at first glance. 1903 VAM 1A is probably the most extreme example on a Morgan dollar.

The SF Mint used lime for polishing [letter 1/31/1881]. Philadelphia used emery of differing grits and rouge.
