Do the TPGs offer acetone dips?

12 posts in this topic

Upon request? Not through the conservation service but through the regular grading. I usually do it myself on raw coins but on crossover or regrades will they do it for you?

The conservation services are extra cost and they do not disclose what they do.

I get that, but I am trying to figure out a way to submit coins without cracking them out of a slab, but have them acetoned before being re-slabbed so as to stop potential toning pollutants, such as the case with coins that toned in PCI slabs.

Is there a way to guarantee an acetone bath before slabbing?

You submit the old slab w/coin in it to NCS. They can conserve it then have NGC reholder it at whatever the assigned grade by NGC. That is, you lose any PCI stuff, including gunk.

Yeah, I'd think the only way they would dip it in anything is if it's shipped to NCS. It's addressed, then sent to NGC for grading and encapsulating.

To just send a random coin for an Acetone bath before grading, I'd doubt seriously.

OK so let's answer the question specifically for PCI coins, is that the best/recommended route? Send to NCS and request some kind of general conservation? There is no other issues with the coin.

My only concern in this would be that these are rainbow toned coins, and I'd hate for the mistake be made that an acetone dip be turned into a full on EZtest dip and all color lost.

I may be wrong but I don't think NGC will cross PCI coins. Don't you have to crack them out before you send them in?

Nick

They wont "cross" in the technical form of the word, But I think they will accept coins in the PCI holders and crack them out? I may be wrong. My question would then be will they crack out and then acetone.

Seems unlikely that anyone could guarantee no loss of "color" -

I'm not worried about loss of color w acetone, I just don't want whatever chemicals are in the PCI holders to continue to act on the coins.

When you send a coin in for conservation NCS will review the coin first to determine "if" whatever the issue is can be corrected. If they're not sure they can do what you want, they won't do anything.

If the coin has natural toning it shouldn't be affected by acetone anyway. If it's in a PCI holder they will not crack it for cross at any grade. They only cross PCGS coins as I understand it.

If it were my coin I'd crack it myself and Acetone it myself also. You're not going to harm it if afterwards you rinse with warm water and "pat" dry.

ICG does free conservation at this time - WHEN REQUESTED. Fazzari (ICG) and Camire (NGC&NCS) were the first conservation specialists at NCS.

NCS has a state-of-the-art lab so I should recommend them in cases of "extreme" problems. For what you wish, ICG is faster, customer friendly, and less expensive. They cross all TPGS coins that meet the submitter's minimum grade. However, everyone knows that most coins bring more in a PCGS slab than one in an NGC slab than one in an ICG slab ...
