Nice note from grader at ICG

10 posts in this topic

I got this note on a submission from Skip at ICG: "You paid $165 for both FE 1c, one coin is a "cull" damaged. The other is much higher grade and nice. We took off the pvc for you". I give them carte blanche for conservation that they do not charge for.

Skip is a great guy, and always gives an interesting lecture at FUN. I make sure I attend whenever I can.

That being said, I really don't see the PVC in your before picture. I'll take your word for it, but it isn't obvious.

Thanks, that's a nice trick.

Actually Skip was wrong on what I paid; $170 for the raw coin, and $115 for the other with some reverse hits that otherwise graded AU50. They turned around the invoice in less than two weeks time, $10 each coin for the service. I wish that PCGS and NGC could offer more flexibility with submissions, but with huge corporate infrastructures there, it would be too much of a challenge for them.

Forgive my naiveté, but, if ICG is a grading company, like PCGS/NGC, where does the "you paid $XXX for these coins" come in?

Unless you are getting a grade guarantee, or buying from them, I am lost on where that comes in.....

Cool on the conversation part, and the price for the service ($10) is nice as well, I am just lost on the cost of the coins being a thing part....

That probably goes to the challenge of successful negotiation tactics with dealers; most of them give a bottom line price and are unwilling to negotiate.

The coin looked like it could have gone Unc. and with the big spread between AU and BU, you sometimes wonder where they draw the line.

I'm just getting my feet wet here, but this is the last place where I would have expected to find a conversation advocating for ICG.

I've been told a short soak in isopropyl alcohol will remove minor PVC. Do you think that is what was done here?

A dip in acetone will apparently do the same thing.

Actually in the lower value coins ICG offers better service in my experience. It can be very collector friendly with a grader you can actually speak with, free conservation, two week turn-arounds on economy orders. And I hate pretentious, biased, judgmental business practices with their cult-like followings. For higher valued coins always go with companies that have substantial financial backing unless it is clear you are operating on an even par.
