1892 Columbian recent aquisition, Grade?

13 posts in this topic

Here is my recently acquired 1892 Columbian. This coin is PL in luster. Notice the reflection in the fields. The reverse is a little brighter than the Obverse. There are very few small marks on this coin.

The reverse has a fine die line that is more or less a circle that goes through the 14, behind the bow, behind the sails, visible between the main sail and the rear sail then down behind the stern, visible between the globe and the lower water level and then through the globes back to the 14. I have several 92's and 93's including the varieties that have real nice detail but are toned to darker coins.. This is the best Luster of the bunch.

Also, you will see some blue and red toning in the pics which is only from the reflection of the camera lens. The only toning is a slightly gold tone of the whole coin around the rim.

I have seen this Die Line or Die Marker on a few 1892's. Is this a common error? Anyways....Comments and Grades are welcome.

That would be a Negative on the cleaning. The devices have a nice frost white mint luster and the field has a polished mint luster like a proof. This coin has been check by a veteran dealer and it has not been cleaned. Attached are a couple of additional pics that hopefully show better.

Your pictures pretty much make it impossible to grade. All the pics seem to have a red color to them which also hides any originality of the coin that needs to be seen.

I like the looks of these pics better. A little small, I'd have to agree with 65. Not sure about PL though. Looks like a nice Columbian to me.

I hate to be a party crasher, but I would call the coin MS64 shot MS64* based on the second photos (I would have said no chance of a star based on the initial images). In my opinion, the mirrors/reflectivity are not deep enough to warrant a PL designation. PL Columbians are readily available and even DPL/DMPL pieces are known to exist. I would be pleasantly surprised if it received a designation.

These new pics show the coin better. I'd probably grade it 64 *

I don't think the obverse is strong enough to get a PL, but the reverse definitely is. It is not uncommon to have mismatched sides like this, but it does prevent getting the PL designation.

Kind of agree with the MS 64. The devices don't seem PL enough to receive that exceptionally difficult designation. The scruffy right field makes me think 64.

Still a beautiful coin I'd love to own.
