Coin Shop Visit on Monday - TONER NEWP

4 posts in this topic

I stopped by a shop that I had not been to

in about 4 years. It actually isn't far

from me but it is small. I walked out with

a new toy. I was actually watching an almost

identical coin on eBay this weekend that sold

for $66 but it was only PCGS PF66 RB and had

some spots/streaks/distractions.

This example has fewer distractions and I paid

considerably less than the above mentioned example.

I think that's a win! I spent way too much time

on the photography tonight as I have had a

plethora of challenges with the photography of

proof toners through slabs recently and think I

figured a few things out and did a little better

on this one. Still far from perfect...

My, my how the world has changed!!!

Back in the day, many ("many" = a lot more than normal and much faster than normal) 1970 Proof sets developed "bull's eye" toning on the cent. Usually it was darker around the edges than on this coin, but it was still one of the those annoyances that made the set less desirable. That was aggravating because the 1970 set was worth a premium because of the half dollar which was not made for general circulation in any form.

Now 1970-S cents with the "bulls eye" are toners that are get high grades and are worth a big premium. hm

I'm not a Lincoln fan or a copper fan, but I know a beautiful copper coin when I see it. Congrats on a great find, they don't come toned this nice very often!
