Are These Two Half Dimes Authentic or Fakes?

10 posts in this topic

I am looking at two half dimes on an auction site. They appear to be UNC in condition, but looking at them something just doesn't seem right. Can't point to it so I am asking you guys for your expert opinion. Are these coins authentic or fake?

My guess is that they are genuine, but that the images are at least slightly distorted.

However, I wouldn't bet that they are unc. They might be, but they could also be AU and/or have problems which aren't apparent in the pictures.

I never grade or judge from pictures.

However, since I am not grading or judging, I am not interested in partaking of what is obviously going to shape up as being the most heated auction competition the world has ever seen for 1/2 dimes....Sorry I can't assist you. I would like to, but, I don't see how I can.

They both look authentic

first has cool die clashes on reverse

both have funny looking right obverse fields - could be AU, cleaned or whizzed

second has line on reverse between half dime - could be deep enough to be scratch

I can't tell on luster - both could be dipped(cleaned) XF/AU

It looks authentic, but I see no luster. I think there is a very good chance that the piece could have been whizzed if the coin has no luster. Alternatively, it may have been cleaned or dipped out. Better photos are necessary to be able to say anything more.

Anyone ever see a clash on a fake?

Yes. If the coin they use for the model for their dies has a clash so will the fakes.

Even if the model doesn't have a clash, many of today's fakes are die struck and if genuine dies can clash and leave marks on each other why couldn't fake dies?

A clashmark can not be assumed to be a sign that a coin is genuine.
