what would cause this color on a buffalo nickle?

I was digging through a bin of pennies and nickles at the flea market and this jumped out at me, I picked it up for .50c, I don't see any marks on this coin so I was wondering if anyone knows what would cause this whole nickel to look identical all the way around? Planchet preparation, storage? I was just wondering

The coin looks like it was dug up and has a layer of environmental damage.

Definitely corroded, you can see the green. The idea that it as dug up seems the best explanation.

Not to beat a dead horse, but yes, this piece is corroded, with rough bubbly surfaces and green verdigris.
