Altered Color ?

8 posts in this topic

So I sent a Indian Head in to NGC and it came back MS details Altered Color.

I can tell if a coin has been cleaned but not sure in how to tell if color is good or not. I have attached 3 pictures. The first is mine. The next 2 are MS Indian heads.

It is a little too uniformly bright orange - almost like a pumpkin in color.

It could have been dipped or gas treated in some way, but color is not natural - hence altered color.

The 1908 cent has flat, subdued luster while the two Mint State coins have surfaces that "play" with the light. It takes a fair amount of experience to spot this consistently, once you get that ability, it can be applied on a consistent basis.
