Collection reduced from over 100 NGC and PCGS Certified Coins - Now the methodical rebuild. by wdrob

In my last journal entry I reflected on my reevaluation of my current collection goals, or lack thereof, and what path I would choose for a future collection, that would more accurately reflect the pride I have in collecting these small slices of history.

More than likely most have noticed that I have listed my current certified collection, both moderns and classic coins, through Great Collections and, although I will be lucky to even come close to breaking even, the response has been excellent and I am very happy to know that many, if not all, of these coins will find a new home.

Sunday evening will be the final hammer and, although I will be saddened to see many of these coins no longer in my inventory, I look forward to freeing myself from a somewhat ad-hock collection to a much more focused collection goal.

I have began that new collection with a cut off grade of MS65/PF65 or above, with few exceptions to that rule. My first two coins to begin this new approach are both 1883-P 'No Cents' Liberty Nickels, one in PF66 Cameo and the other in MS66, both NGC. This is a design that I have always liked very much and I have always found the story behind the 'No Cents' version (even though they were widely saved and not very rare) to be intriguing.

I hope to remain highly selective in my purchase choices and apply the same standard to the Classic Gold that will be added slowly and with a purpose. My eventual goal is to have an extremely nice, high grade type set, with Gold, and focusing first on those coins that I find to be of great historical importance. Second will be keeping in mind that I am working on a 'Box of 30' (that is the capacity of the aluminum slab case I recently purchased) and being extremely selective will be a must.

I continue to have an extensive uncertified and OGP coin holding and plan to continue adding to that raw collection when the opportunity presents. In addition, my recent investment into higher quality photography equipment and my continuing desire to learn more and more about taking quality photos also adds to this hobby considerably.

This is such a great hobby!

Those nickels are an awesome start to your new quest! I love high grade Liberty Nickels and the picture you have posted is outstanding. Take it from someone who has invested a lot in photography equipment, good macro photography is a quest unto itself! I like that aluminum box you bought for your new coins, I'm going to have to get a few of those for myself. I'll be following your new direction with a lot of interest

All the best.

Absolutely Gary, the photography aspect has definitely added a new dimension and with the Ray, Bob, Justin, and numerous others helping me understand some of the basic concepts my part was easy; just shelling out the cash.

I still have much to work on to be where I want with my personal coin photography and I anticipate that to be half the fun.

As to the aluminum boxes; I would recommend them to anyone wishing to conserve space in their safe or safe deposit box. The one I bought seemed a little less sturdy than I had expected but I believe it will suffice and with a full box of thirty the handle will not fall off.

Hi Bill,

Continued success with the "re-focusing" of your collection.

Also love the photo and the obvious expertise you have gained in this area. Lastly, the storage box seems a winner for those looking to conserve space in their safe deposit boxes.

Cheers !

Bill,

Your photography is looking great. The sale of your coins to regroup and start a new higher grade and rarer set shows that you have moved up in the collecting community. As you now have a good set up for pics it will be a thrill each time you show your future high value acquisitions off. That 1883 No Cents looks GREAT!! (thumbs u

Good luck in building your new sets!! :)

It's good to have focus and a direction in your collecting. It sounds like you have a newly implemented plan, in mind, and I like the direction that you are heading. A type set is a great thing to get involved with, especially GOLD. Your Liberty Nickel is stunning! I, especially, like the idea of MS/PF 65 or 66 coins, too, as they will provide a better return. You are definitely evolving and improving as a collector. GOOD LUCK and continued success!
