I purchased an 1835 half cent off ebay, thought I got a great deal

I weighed it - 5.28 grams, supposed to weigh 5.44 grams

is it possible to be off a gram, (edited .10 grams NOT 1 gram) or my scale is off

pictures attached, legit??

Nice coin. Are you sure the numbers you quoted are correct? I ask because you say the coin is off by a gram, but your measurements indicate otherwise. 5.44 grams - 5.28 grams = 0.16 grams.

According to the Coin World Encyclopedia, the tolerance for a half cent from 1837 to 1857 was 0.227 grams, so yours sounds like it's within tolerance.

The book doesn't list tolerances for any coins before about 1834, so perhaps tolerances of planchets weren't established until then?
