Any "Star Makers" on the Board ?

56 posts in this topic

One of the things I like most about NGC is their "star" grade... granted some of you might think its hokey, arbitrary and relatively a non-issue.

However, as a fan of toners, I like the grade and I enjoy submitting coins in order to earn such a grade... call it a challenge, validation or whatever but seeing a star on a final submission report brings a smile to my face...

They are few and far between (outside Morgans) when it comes to toned coins. They seem to be easily given to proof coins that are just missing a UCAM designation or a CAM designation. (See a search of Ebay).

With that in mind... how many of our esteemed board members have made "stars" over the years for toned coins ? I suspect the proof stars come from dealer bulk submissions mostly, but if you have skills on proof stars I would love to hear about that as well.

I think Ive hit about 12 or so on several toned Peace $, War Nickels, Mercs, WLHs, Lincolns and Ikes...

Anyone here that has a great % of stars on submissions ? Share a story ? Post some photos ? Anyone ever get a star on a cross over from PCGS ?

I've only ever made one star. A proof Franklin half. It had the deepest cameo obverse you could imagine but no contrast whatsoever on the reverse. Graded out at PF69*. I no longer own the coin so I will not post an image of the coin.

I have submitted several coins in the past with the hopes of receiving a Star designation, mostly Morgan dollars with wonderful toning. Although none of those coins came back with a Star, I have high hopes for my most recent submission. In this submission, they are all Proof coins that exhibit exceptional cameo contrast on the Obverse, Reverse or both. Some coins should come back as Cameo, a couple of UCAM(I hope!) and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for at least 3-4 Stars, maybe a couple more! I should receive the grades tomorrow or Friday and will update with my results if any Star designations are given.

I had this terrific black/white coin come back from NGC MS 62 *+.

I was rather disappointed it was only an MS 62. I sold it at auction during the summer for $130 as I recall.

I have made probably 30+ star coins but I have never had a submission where I got back a large percentage.....I think I got 3 or 4 on one submission that had maybe 30 coins but usually they are few and far between.

I think that still gets you an award ! 30 total is very impressive.

Its not always easy figuring out what the graders like. Some coins are clear stars but miss but then other times I am surprised at what makes a star - at least when it comes to toners. I think the proofs are more clear cut though.

Im not a PL guy but I can see a coin just missing PL getting one.

Shane - has your 30+ been across the board on different denominations or have you had success in one/two areas more so then others ?

If you were disappointed with a 62 on that coin, either Liberty's face doesn't look nearly as bad in person, or you had unrealistic hopes/expectations.

I just got this one back within the past 30 days. It was graded NGC MS 63 Star. Personally, I have other coins with much better eye appeal to me that got no such designation.

I'm not sure I would be called a star "maker," but I am certainly a collector of many star designated NGC coins. While I have made a few stars, most of my star designated coins were already slabbed when I acquired them.

I forgot I also made another start back in the day. It was a Morgan, I can't recall the date. I ended up giving it away in a photo contest. Shane won it maybe he can post a picture of it since I'm sure I don't have a photo of it any longer. But it did have the most wonderful album target on the reverse.

Morgans, Roosevelts, Franklin halves comprise the majority.

I remember the coin well...it was an MS61 and I certainly have the pictures but digging through 3/4 of a million photos to find it would be a bit challenging lol

I submitted this coin in an ICG 65 holder to Shane for consignment. He felt it had a shot at 65* at NGC. Closed a $1k

Nice pickup and submission. Thats one that if I would have submitted would have thought it had a solid chance at a star... Beautiful coin BTW...

The NGC star is a designation, not a grade. ;)

I stand corrected. Thank you Mark...

Morgans seem to make up the majority of all toned star coins. Which makes sense since they seem to tone up "the best."

Roosies, Franklins and Washington Quarters also tone nicely so Ive seen some stars within their ranks.

Has anyone see an abundance of star toned Lincolns ? Seems like there are a lot of 1970 toned proof stars but few others. I rarely see toned * JFKS or Ikes.

These two Buffs were submitted by me a while back and got the star designation. I purchased these two from a guy who had an old coin album left to him by his grandfather and decided to sell them. ALL of the coins were beautifully toned but some had wear. These two were the only ones that were uncirculated and VERY beautiful as you can clearly see. The toning is also almost identical.

The dime and quarter were purchased by me as is.....

Ive never gotten a STAR, but Im going to submit a couple in this week. 1 rainbow toned nickel (probably the best toner Ive ever had), a 1964 Accent Hair PF68 CAMEO, and a 1955 Franklin Half PF69 CAMEO

Now we are talking ! Post some pics - lets see if we can get a consensus from the Board members as to question - "Will She or Wont She" Star ? lol...

We have some pretty good graders from photos here lets see if we can create a resource for star designations as well...
