Could it be a setup die tool?

Friends,

I was doing some pics of my Lincolns of which the proofs were too dark and the business strike were too bright. They will all need a redo but in the task I found something cool on the reverse of the 1974-D. It seems to be a plate or tool with the number 22 in the center of it. Left on the die and compressed into the reverse before making this Lincoln.

Normally I'd say those are die scratches, but the 22 is a real mystery. Nice find Rick,

if you find out what this is I'd be curious for you to report back your findings.

All the best!

Gary

Well I am baffled on this one!! The impression matches nothing on a Lincoln cent. Looks to me like a dial from a tool that was put through the crush test as the press crushed it. Left the impressions on the reverse die.
