Is this a fake 1909 S VDB

8 posts in this topic

The coin is a real 1909-VDB. The "S" mintmark was added, as the good Capt. noted.

A long-gone dealer I once knew had a bunch of these he'd acquired from sets, and collections he'd bought. Whenever things got too stressful in the coin business, he would take one of these and smash it to bronze bits with a hammer. He said it was very calming.

This. Go to CoinFacts, eBay, or any other site with a picture of a genuine 1909-S VDB cent and enlarge the mint mark. You will instantly be able to see that this is not a legitimate mint mark from the period and was added as the others have said.

I'm not a Lincoln expert, but these are relatively easy to spot with a little magnification. On a genuine

1909-S the serifs (ends) on the 'S' are parallel to one another, obvious the one you show are not.

Also notice that the mint mark is sitting in somewhat of a depression, this is created when the metal

was moved to 'create' the bogus mint mark.

The history the Captain gave you is fascinating, believe what you see and hear.

Be careful using that as a diagnostic, one of the genuine dies also has the mintmark seeming to sit in a depression.
