I upgraded a few coins over this past year and I finally

had a few new images taken. { Images by Messydesk }

I had this coin in an NGC 63 holder - resubmitted it -

and it came back as an NGC 63+ Still not satisfied, I

submitted it ATS and they agreed with me, its a MS 64.

This next coin caught my eye and I thought it was heads

and tails nicer than the MS 64 that was in my collection, so...

Another upgrade - and I saw this while at FUN this January;

my friend Broadstruck told me where it was ... so I marched

right over there and scooped this one up in a hurry:

Another upgrade I liked - just a very handsome coin... and

I couldn't resist:

Lastly, just a nice AU coin - one I have never seen in an AU 58+ CAC...

Marvelous coins! Did you have to bust out that 1919-S to get the upgrade(s)?

No, I submitted the coin in its original holder the first time

at NGC when the coin was in its MS 63 Holder:

I received an upgrade of MS 63+ at NGC ... which was submitted to PCGS

and I received the upgrade to MS 64.

I purchased this coin from Broadstruck, and he was convinced

it would get into a 64 holder.

CAC ignores the plus when deciding whether to sticker a coin.

As always with your stuff, a fun group of coins to shoot. The 1930 AU58+ "super slider" shows precisely and plainly where to look on an SLQ for rub -- above Liberty's right knee. In the larger photos, it's easier to see the subtle luster break on an otherwise MS64 coin. AU58+ in many cases is the ultimate "value" grade if you're looking for bang for your buck instead of registry points.

However, if there are a number of collectors putting that Everyman thing together "value" will go away soon enough....unfortunately.

Yeah, I've heard that since the head doesn't have the flowers it isn't full...but in my experience that 1920 of yours has more of an FH than many I've seen graded that way. That's a FH, IMO.

With or without the FH grade that's a great one!

All the full strike designations are a bit flawed when it comes to trying to correlate them with desirability or value. Strike fullness is a rather smooth continuum from pancake to hammered, and yet we designate and often price only full and not full strikes. It's like being able to say only that it's hot outside or cold outside, and having no way of expressing the temperature and expecting the marketplace to not be interested in whether by hot you mean 60 or 90 and by cold you mean 20 or 59. Nearly full-strike 1945 Mercury dimes and 1953-S Franklin halves are among the top percent or two of their kind, and like the AU58+ grade, represent quite the value over their überspendig full-strike counterparts.

A FH has to show the curve and separation of Liberty's hair as well as the three laurel leaves. Upper surface of hair must be rounded.

FH does not mean a fully struck coin. Look on the shield, toes and stars for complete design details.

I've never cared to much about the designations myself only because I'm not that much or a strike freak. I think it's fine to collect whatever you want but, IMO, the premiums paid are far too high many times.

However, I fully admit I'm known for paying too much for color so who am I to criticize? However, just because there are price guides for strike designations and there isn't for "color premium" does mean this isn't the same type of situation. We are all pretty insane sometimes. :insane:
