Monster Morgans

8 posts in this topic

We have recently lamented the lack of Monster Morgans on the market and in particular in the FUN auction. I got to wondering what is our definition of a monster morgan and do we mostly agree on examples?

Do you think this 1883O is a monster: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5912344&fpart=1

And this 1885O: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5904155&fpart=1

How about this 1884O: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1181&lotNo=11736&lotIdNo=5598

Or this 1885O (#2): http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1181&lotNo=6143&lotIdNo=328013

This 1879S: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221092434331?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Or this 1896: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221169602266?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

My opinion? The 83O and the 85O are monsters although lower grades (MS64). The 84O is very nice but no monster. The 1885O (#2) is MS68 and extremely nice but not a monster. The 79S is also very nice and has good colors but still not a monster. The 96 I would call a monster. With my opinion and a dollar you can get coffee at McDonald's.

So now that the new to the boards old man has given his opinion, please share your opinion on any or all. Sorry that I do not have the pictures included but I do not know if it is allowable and I do not know how to include them.

Thank you for sharing.

Maybe

The problem is, even if people could agree on what constitutes a "monster" (and clearly, in many cases, they can't) not all monsters are created equally. And then, of course, there are the "beasts".

When you shine a spotlight on the coin and crank up the contrast in Photoshop, all coins become monsters. You have to see these in person to really tell.

Thank you to all who replied. It seems like we have at least a general agreement. Mark is definitely correct that not all monsters are created equally.

The real measure of our individual opinion on a monster is how much will we pay for it.

Thanks again for your replies.
