1918-s walker

Early Liberty Walking Half Dollars are very difficult to grade, especially from internet photos. The problem lies in the strike. Many pieces were weakly struck and it may appear as wear. The only way to tell is to view the coin in hand to determine, for instance, whether the luster has been disturbed on the high points.

This coin looks like it could have wear which would make me grade it AU53. If, however, the coin has undisturbed luster and what I am perceiving as wear is nothing more than a weak strike (which it could easily be - again, I would need to see the coin in hand), I could see a low MS grade, probably MS62.

I posted this coin once before unfortunately my pictures were terrible. These show the color and luster much better.

I am curious of your thoughts regarding the toning.

Thanks in advance Jim

No one has commented on the disjointed, weak strike on the right leg. I'm not an early Walker specialist, but that is the first point that caught my attention. So we have a weak central strike and an absence of metal flow to complete the devices on the Obverse. The Reverse shows a weak central line strike but not as weak as the Obverse. It appears to me that we have a weakly struck Walker that has toned very nicely IMHO and I have no way to determine if there is wear or the pics simply show a weak strike.

My gut impression is weak strike and wear. AU55 and I like the toning.

I would grade it AU-58 with the usual flat strike that plagues the S-mint walkers from the teens. There is an outside chance that could be a low end Mint State piece under the toning, but AU seems more probable.

As everyone else has stated, it probably has light wear---AU 55-58 is my guess w/o seeing it in hand. It DOES look to have a light wear pattern over the central high points.

The toning looks OK and MAY BE NT (that would be my guess but again I can't say for sure based on just the images) It is a pleasant olive green color.
