Appearance Review & Copper

2 posts in this topic

I am about to send in a order to be graded and I thought I might throw in another invoice for Appearance Review. Before I do that, I have a couple of questions regarding AR on coppers:

On copper cents graded prior to the 10-yr color guarantee period, is it only the color that is not guaranteed? What about the grade of the coin? Or other problems with a copper coin?

I have three Red Lincolns that I am thinking about sending in:

1. A 1953-S MS67RD that has almost no detail to Lincoln's head.

2. A 1950-P MS67RD that has mold or some growth on it that covers a good portion of the coin.

3. A 1912-D MS65RD that has a big purple spot on the reverse that is likely a fingerprint. It also has some extensive carbon spots on the obverse that I believe limits the grade.

All three of these were bought about two years ago without a return policy. The problems have not seemed to get any worse since I owned them. Would these fit into Appearance Review or not?

If they would be acceptable for AR, would I just pay the normal return shipping charges on a separate invoice?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help!

Jeff

P.S. If needed, I can post pictures of the above-mentioned coins.

As you'll see if it was certified prior to when we began printing NUMISMATIC GUARANTY CORPORATION on the label, the grade is not guaranteed.

[Florida]  Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of America (NGC) today announced that it will begin offering a grading guarantee for copper, bronze and copper-nickel coins certified by NGC. This guarantee is available only for coins certified by NGC since adoption of its current generation holder. These are easily recognized by the words NUMISMATIC GUARANTY CORPORATION at the bottom of the grading label. With respect to copper, bronze and copper-nickel coins only, the NGC Grading Guarantee expires ten (10) calendar years from the date of grading by NGC.

Copper and its alloys are highly reactive with the atmosphere and other environmental factors. For that reason NGC has not previously offered a grade guarantee for these coins. However, NGC’s newly introduced, hermetically sealed, state-of-the-art coin holder offers a much higher degree of protection against environmental factors than was previously possible, enabling NGC to offer grade guarantees for such coins.

NGC Vice-President Rick Montgomery elaborated on NGC’s expanded guarantee: “NGC is proud to extend its guarantee to those copper issues of United States and world coins. Montgomery added, “We look forward to an extremely positive market reaction, as collectors and dealers alike buy and trade these coins with even greater confidence. This will bring an added level of protection to all applicable issues certified by NGC.”

Submitters may return previously NGC certified Copper coins for reholdering. NGC reserves the right to return coins in their existing holders if it believes that the coins’ grade can not be guaranteed. Applicable coins encapsulated in NGC’s older holders, submitted to NGC, will automatically be pre-screened for possible conservation. Submitters will be notified if conservation is advisable, and coins will be forwarded upon request to NCS .

NGC may be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 4776, Sarasota, FL 34230 or by calling toll-free at 800-NGC-COIN (642-2646). NGC’s email address is Service@NGCcoin.com.

Hopefully this answers your questions. Should you need anything further, please contact Customer Service at (800) 642-2646

Sincerely,

Sarah
