Heart Versus Collecting Bug

8 posts in this topic

Or, how I have to eventually collect a coin I have no desire to own.

Folks,

I think most of us have pondered, or even written about, the addictive nature of this hobby. Sometimes the hobby just takes over our lives, strains our relationships, and even causes us to make unwise financial decisions.

This post is about none of that!! I just want to rant about the fact that I must eventually purchase the 1943/2 Jefferson Nickel to complete my wartime silver nickel set.

So you're probably thinking, why does he HAVE to buy that nickel? Well long story short, I NEED to acheive symmetry in all my sets. That's why I rarely collect a set unless I have a high expectation that I will someday complete the set (100%=symmetry). My only exception to this rigid, self-imposed, rule is my 1st generation commemorative set. Not sure why I made that exception but it's my crazy brain so why not.

So, even though I have no desire to collect the 1943/2 and even though I don't believe it's a necessary coin in a basic wartime silver nickel set, I HAVE to eventually buy it to get to that blasted 100%. I will wait until the Peace Dollar set is done before I even consider buying that nickel. That puts the nickel set completion somewhere in 2015, or so.

Hope all your collecting endeavours are much less stressful,

Malcolm

Jason,

I feel your pain brother. Begs the question, why don't they make us collect the 1942/1 and 1942-D/1 to complete our short Mercury sets. I'm thinking some long ago collector requested those Washington Quarter RPMs and that Jefferson OD be added to the sets and NGC said Why Not.

:)

Malcolm, I would say there is one in every set really if you look hard enough. If it is not one you don't want---It is one you can't afford at the same price as the others. Even your example above -- Short Merc Set with the Micro s -- I got the set and had it for a couple years but have no intentions of looking for the micro s.

Maybe in 2015 -----WHO KNOWS??? I have other coins that are worth being broke over that satisfy my numismatic lusts. :)

Later---Rick

Malcom,

Been there done that - I wasn't going to add the varieties to my Roosevelt set and then I started to find raw coins and was hooked.

I've learned to throw logic into the wind with collecting. Good luck acquiring that 43/2 overdate. Cool coin by the way. I have a friend that found a really nice VF/XF coin in a Jefferson book he bought a few years back for something like $40... What a lucky guy!!!

You may want to see what in your collection do you not value the most and sell it and put it towards the nickel. A lot of collectors sell coins to purchase other coins
