Removing haze/grime from a medal

I recently bought a medal on eBay that is very nice but had some grime and haze on one side. I'm pretty sure it's silver. What's the best way to remove it without harming the medal?

It's a Washington Monument unveiling medal.

acetone is what I would start with. After that, things to apply become progressively more harsh.

Correction, it's actually just white metal. Is acetone safe?

but not safe on plastics, vinyls, organics, surface contaminants,....

If it's actually a tin medal, be very careful (I would leave it alone unless there is a plug to hinder the development of tin pest).
