“Sign of the lion” Civil War token

I like really unusual Civil War token designs, and this one as long been one of my favorites. The trouble is it appears on a limited number of tokens, and almost all of the examples that I have seen though the years have been damaged. When I was dealer for more than twelve years, I handled only one decent token that had this design.

 

I was most pleased to spot this one at the Baltimore show. As Civil War tokens go, it was not cheap at $135.00, but having been in the business for a while I knew that it was a scarce item in this state of preservation. The token is an EF and it is rated as an R-6. The Fuld number is WI 360-1a.

Great looking original coin with nice even chocolate brown color. Every old copper coin should look this good.
