Why would I buy a seemingly duplicate coin ?

If I had asked this question in the Mega Barber Thread,

I seriously doubt I would get any replies, as I think most

as either turned off by having to wade thru over 1,000 posts

... instead of just going to the last page on the thread.

I asked this question ATS @ Coin Talk and PCGS. I now ask it here:

Why would I buy a seemingly duplicate coin ?

While I was at the Pittsburgh ANA a couple of weeks ago, I picked up

a few Barber Halves for my latest project. One of them was a very nice

example of my favorite date:

This evening, I bid on and won another example in approximately the

same grade - same service - but [ aside from the fact that I am a compulsive

Barber collector ] why would I buy a seemingly duplicate coin so soon after

my purchase in Pittsburgh ??

No - I am not hoarding the date - what was the reason for this 2nd purchase ?

No - its not a gift either - No - I'm not starting yet another collection [ yet ].

Cräp. Here I thought it was a gift for someone.

I suppose it could have been a really good deal and you're looking for it to be a "lateral upgrade" -- a coin that you might like better than the one you currently have. You'd also have some nice leverage in a trade for other coins you want or need for that collection.

Either that, or you mistook it for a quarter. :)

Out of over 847,000 coins minted, only about 2,000 remain. The number of these actually graded appears to be very low - maybe 50-100? Is it a difficult coin to find and purchase in any state?
