"As always, eBay is committed to bringing you amazing deals on gold and silver. However, to do so, we can no longer offer eBay Bucks for purchases from the Bullion category within Coins & Paper Money. This change will take effect October 1, 2011. To learn more about earning and redeeming eBay Bucks, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page. And remember that you can always tell whether an item qualifies for eBay Bucks by looking for the earn amount below the price on the item description page."

It doesn't make any sense unless they are selling some bullion as well. Since they are supposed just be the middle man it shoudn't matter if they are selling socks or gold bullion as long as they get their cut.

It might make sense only if they will also reduce their commissions (final value fees) on bullion items, commissions which are already relatively very high considering the usual low margin bullion sellers work with. Lets hope this is the preliminary step towards reducing commissions on bullion items.

Earlier this summer E-bay eliminated third party referral rewards from the likes of Mr. Rewards, Fat Wallet and E-Bates. Now they eliminate E-bucks for bullion purchases. In each case E-bay saves dollars that don’t have to be paid out to referrers or buyers but do selling fees get lower? No. The same amount of dollars are being extracted from sellers but now the dollars don’t flow to the buyers but rather end up in E-bay’s corporate coffers. That is the bottom line. E-bay is taking a bigger cut of the transaction fees associated with using their platform: Simple.
