50 years ago today Alan Shepard flew aboard Mercury-Redstone 3 (MR-3), named Freedom 7, to become America's first astronaut. The flight was suborbital and only lasted about 15 minutes. Shepard reached a height of about 116 miles and traveled 302 miles. Post a space related coin or a 1961 coin in celebration.
