UNC Jefferson nickels, MS70 and toning

1 post in this topic

I was wondering if you could offer an opinion or offer other insight into my head scratcher

I have some nice uncirculated Jefferson nickels both the nickel/copper and the silver/manganese/copper versions

I have used the product MS70 on a few of these and noticed that occasionally the toning disappears - but not always

the MS70 is claimed to not be an acid or react with any metal -

my understanding is that it is a strong base (NaOH) with a detergent

so what happens to the color sometimes? I am pretty sure these are naturally toned coins -

Do you have any suggestions on the use of this product? a 1:10 dilution in distilled water? short contact time? neutralization after exposure?
