COIN REEDING ?

What causes a coin to have the reeding missing on just 1/3 of the coin? The coin in question is not an out of collar strike, an off center strike or misaligned dies.

I would think the easiest explanation would be a file.

Nope it has not been altered in any way.

If the missing portion is at the same height as the reeded portion, it may be the result of a collar cud or broken portion of the collar.

It looks like with each succesive reeding they disappear into a blank planchet and then the reeding starts to appear again with each succesive reeding. A very strange looking coin. It sort of looks like the reeding tapers into a blank and then tapers back into reading again.

Without seeing the coin I'm guessing it's clad and from misalligned dies.

It is a 1996 P dime and it is not a misalligned die error.

Perhaps a worn or bent collar. Worn doesn't seem likely in 1996 though.
