Is It Worth Sorting?

Someone gave me a five gallon bottle about 1/3 of the way full of coins. Should I go through each coin and look for anything valuable or just take it to the bank and dump it in a coin counter?

I’d say it depends how much you like coins. Personally, I would go through it while I watch the football games this weekend…

My collection consists of one WWII quarter and a ton of bicentennial quarters. :-)

Without driving yourself looney searching for varieties, you may want to search for certain categories:

 

Lincoln Wheat Cents

Copper-based Lincolns prior to 1982

Silver coinage, both 90% and 40%, prior to 1971

 

There aren't many varieties for States Quarters, so you might want to give a closer examination to the Wisconsin's for the High" and "Low" Leaf, but I can't say if a circulated specimen is worth anything or not.

I agree with Chris. Depending on how long they've been in the jar, ya never know what you'll find.

I would at least search thru the jar for any silver coins pre 1964 (10C, 25C, 50C).
