First Impression of NGC Ancients (with pics)

7 posts in this topic

I recently sent a couple dozen ancients to NGC Ancients to see how their grading and attribution were.

Some of these were graded by ICG before. For the most part NGC graded them higher which I expected since ICG was unusually harsh on ancients. Also as expected, NGC graded most of them higher than the companies I purchased them from. For the most part, I agree more with the NGC grade than the sellers grade.

It's pretty easy to see what NGC is looking for in the Strike grade. The surface grade was a little harder to pin down. Some I thought had great surfaces only got so-so grades. One got noted as "hairlines" which is something that I was not expecting.

A couple came back with different information than what the seller stated. I don't know ancients well enough to tell who is correct. hm

Here is a selection of the coins:

That is a very nice group of coins. One thing I would be worried about would be irregularly shaped planchets not being held properly in the prongs. Do you find this to be a problem? Is a coin securely held if it only contacts 3 prongs?

Some of the coins are not fully in the prong grooves. I tried banging them into place, but they didn't budge. I suspect they will hold.

Agreed, a very nice group of coins and of excellent quality also. I still find it somewhat amazing that coins that old still exist in that level of preservation. I wish I could find some of the coins I collect as nice as those, and they are "moderns" compared to these.

Greg,

Great info, and beautiful coins!

As far as some coming back with different info from what the sellers said, I'd wager a fair sum to say NGC got it right. After all, you have none other than David Vagi as the NGC Ancients finalizer.

nice lot!

Doug
