Which of these is harder to obtain in modern issues? Should they be worth the same points for the same grade?

FT dimes are a lot less frequent than FS nickels on modern issues. All modern nickles will be FS (before they get scartches over the steps) and roughly less than half of dimes will be struck with a full torch.

Why does it matter, they can't compete against each other.

It matters cause there is a large difference in points. As far as I can figure, a FT dime should be as tough as a FS nickel and worth as many points in the respective set competitions.
